COURT DPAfiS ALONG UNUSUALLY DULL TERM Rain The First of the Week Cuts Off the Crowd —Docket Is Small and of Minor Importance The dullest term i»f court for > several years drags its weary length along. The docket is small, and the cases of minor importance. Clerk M. T. Chil ton told the Reporter man today at noon that the term might last until Friday, but this is doubtful. Heavy rains the first day of the week put the roads in bad condition, and nobody attended court except those who were compelled to come. It was very disagreeable, wet. muddy and sloshy. The crowd was small. The attendants consisted almost wholly of jurors, witnesses or parties to the suits. Cases that have been disposed of up to this (Wednesday! af ternoon are as follows : State v. Rober Caudle, indict ment retailing, verdict guilty. State v. Robah Flynt. indict ment assault with deadly weap on. defendant pleaded guilty,, judgment suspended on payment of cost. State v. John Hall, indictment assault with deadly weapon, not guilty. , State v. Marion Lawson. Lige Lawson. indictment larceny. Solicitor's bill changed to forci- ] ble trespass. Judgment suspend ed upon payment of cost. State v. Ruck Reid. Hard! James, Bogue James, Jessie Riid. indictment assault with deadly weapon. Verdict, not guilty as to Bogue James, guilty as to other defendants. Judg ment suspended >n payment of cost. State v. J. W. Shelton. Elmer Shelton. Will Shelton, J. E. M Stedman Ad dresses Larjfe Crowd In Ccurt House At Danbury Major Charies M. Stedman spoke in the court house Monday to a large crowd, giving an ac count of his stewardship while at Washington as a member of Congress. He arraigned the Republican party in the strong est terms for its record, and de-. nounced Theodore Roosevelt as "having the worst record of any . man in America." He predicted that Craig would carry North Carolina, and that Woodrow Wilson would be elected by a majority unparalleled in the an nals of politics. The address was in the Ma jors's best style —strong, unaf fected, sincere. and| attired in beautiful English. On Tuesday afternoon Mr. C.O. McMichael spoke in the interest of Judge Clark's candidacy f r the Senate. He denounced both Simmons and Kitchin for the former's record in Congress and the latter as a do-nothing Governor. The audience was overwhelmingly for Kitchin. 1 _ _ I DANBURY ROUTE ONE. Farmers Almost Through Cutting Tobacco —Personals, Danbury. Sept. 21. I Editors Reporter : Please allow me space in your ! valuable paper for a few lines. Farmers are most through cutting tobacco in this section. It is being cured very well. A large crowd of young people enjoyed a candy stew Saturday night at Mr. W. P. Ray's. Misses Hester and Mintoria Oakley. Bertha and Sonie ' Mabe spent Saturday evening and Sunday with Miss Hattie Wood. Mr. Jim Dodson and family l and Miss Kate Dodson visited' Mr. Frank Dodson Saturday and Sunday. Mr. Sam Simmons, of Wins ton. and Miss Judea Ray attend ed preaching at Snow Creek Sunday. Mr. Carl Ray, who has been playing ball in Miami, Key West and San ford, Florida, is at home for a few days before entering school at Whitsett Institute. SAMSON. Sept. 24. - Sidna Allen and Wesley Edwards, the mountian gun-men. were arraigned here in the same court room where on March 14 ' five lives were snuffed out in a shooting affray of which they are alleged to have been the ring leaders. CHURCH Proposition Will Be Made At Quarter!> Conference Saturday To Assign Part of Churches To Another Minister The regular Ouarterlv Confer ence of the M. E. church for Danbury circuit will be held at Snow Hill M. E. church next Saturday and Sunday. Presid ing Elder R. M. Taylor, of Mt. Airy, will be j resent. It is i r.jbable that at this meeting of the conference an im portant change will be made in the Danbury circuit. There are in the circuit ten or twelve churches, all of which are sup plied by Rev. T. J. Folger, of Danbury, and the conference will be asked to divide the work, giving churches of the lower or- southern half of the county to Rev. C. R. Hutch erson, a local minister, of Wal nut Cove. The work as arranged at present is more than one man j can well do. all of the churches being widely separated, and making it almost impossible for Mr. Folger to meet some of his appointments. It is hoped that the conference will see proper to make the change. A LAST RESORT TO SAVE WHISKEY. Mr. N. Glen Williams Declares He's Victim of Malicious Prosecution. Alleging that he is the victim of a prosecution actuated by personal malice towards him on the part of Federal revenue officers, Mr. N. Glen Williams, through his attorney, ex-Judge Bynum, is making the last stand before Judge Boyd in an attempt [to save his 25.000 gallons of 'of whiskey from the auctioneer's hammer. If he fails —as he has done before -that hammer j will fall and on September 30, This is the date set for the sale by United States Commissioner ;of Internal Revenue Cabell of ! Washington and Mr. Cabell is ' unrelenting, according to Judge ! Bynum. The protracted services which were to have been started in the Presbyterian church here last Sunday had to be postponed on account of the illness of Rev. 1 Melton Clark, of Greensboro, who was to have assisted in the meeting. It is not known just when the meeting will be held. Reynolds Company To Er ct Ten Large Storage Sheds. A building permit was issued today to the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company for the erec tion of ten large storage sheds, built of wire and corrugated iron with slag roofs. Among the good citizens of King here this week are Messrs. S. R. Fulp. G. M. Allen, E. 0. Caudle, and J. R. Hutchens. I . j A public examination will be held at Danbury for white teach ers, on Friday and Saturday, I Oct. 4-5. Colored teachers will be examined on Monday, Oct. 7. i J. T. SMITH, Co. Supt. FOR COUNTY S. S. CONVENTION To Be Htld At Palmyra M. F. Chuich On Friday, October 18th. The date for the annual meet ing of the Stokes County Sun day School Convention has been fixed for Friday.' October and the meeting will be held at Palmyra M. E. church, about seven miles south of on the Germanton ruad. The county meetings of the convention which are held an nually are interesting occasions and always well attended. Peo ple are usually present from all sections of the county. The program for the meeting tl.is year has not yet been ar ranged. It will be published in this paper as soon as it is ar ranged. _ i Madison Items. Miss Annie Smith left Monday morning for Wenonda. Va..' where she will teach school this winter. Messrs. J. H. Joyce and H. L. Glenn, who have been in the warehouse business in Lake City. S. C., returned home Sunday . morning. Mr. George King. Jr.. who has the contract for the brick work of the new store building for the Farmers' Exchange Co.. has several hands at work and has commenced laying the brick. Messrs. J. G. and Will Thomas returned home Sunday after spending the summer in South Carolina in the warehouse busi ness. Mr. J. G. Thomas will, be with the Piedmont warehouse at Winston this season, and has already gone there to* take up his work. We learn that the daily mail between Madison and Greens boro will bo discontinued the last of this month. This will cause considerable inconvenience to i our citizens and they at once should get busy and see that it is i not done. i Good Results From Sand Clay Roads In Forsvth. j Winston Daily Sentinel. County Highway Engineer W. :L. Spoon states that there is jnoieason why many miles of sand-clay road should not be built in Forsvth county within | the next few years. Many people who were not favorably impressed with this kind of road some time ago have bjen convinced that it is not only an economical and good kind ot' road, but serves its purpose just as well as macadam on roads on which traffic is light. Mr. Sp ion also stated that sand-clay streets are built bj many cities. For sale by all dealers. No. 2,007 GOING TO FLORIDA GIDEON PARTY TO LEAVE Mrs. B J- Martin and Daughter and Mr. J. G. H. Mitchell and Family of Gideon to Invest In Calla han. It is learned with regret in Danbury that Mrs. B. J. Martin and daughter. Miss Annie Martin, and Mr. J. (i. H. Mitchell and tamily, of »ideon. will leave soon for Florida to make their future home. Mrs. Martin and daughter expect to depart about November 1. while it is the intention of Mr. Mitchell and family to leave about 3') days later. Mr. Mitchell has l>een in declining health recently, and at this time is iuite ill. He hopes the mild climate of Florida will benefit him. Mrs. Martin is also in delicate health, and desires to try the Florida climate. The party has leased property at Callahan, with the view of later purchasing the same. Mr. \V. J. Flynt, of Gideon, returned from Florida last week where he investigated the loca tion which the Dillard people have accepted. Mrs. Martin's mercantile busi ness at Gideon will be closed out to Mr. W. J. Flynt. who expects to continue it. Mrs. Martin and family and Mr. Mitchell and family are among the best people of Stokes, and their leaving will be a dis tinct loss in citizenship as well as property to our county. Reeves Jones Kills Two Rattle snakes. Mr. Reeves Jones, the young son of I)r. A. (I. Jones, of Wal nut Cove, is entitled to the snake honors of the season. Reeves has killed two big rat : tiers this summer. There are j lots of grown men in this sec j tion who have never seen a live 1 rattlesnake. But Reeves, who i with his father's family was spending the season at Piedmont i Springs. had the luck to dis | cover two big rattlers, near Piedmont, and killed them both, j Mr. Tom Petree. of Danbury, also killed a big rattler on the ! mountain the other day. Meeting Postponed At Sandy Ridge. The protracted services which ■ were to have been held by Rev. : T. J. Folger and others at Sandy Ridge M. K. church beginning last Sunday were postponed j on account of the severe weather. The meeting was postponed until tie fourth Sunday in October. Rev.
